Update 07-May-2010

"On a slight rise in the midst of this brown or green or whiteness stood the hamlet, a huddle of grey stone walls and pale slated roofs with only the bushiness of a fruit-tree or the dark line of a yew hedge to relieve its colourlessness....All the cottages in the group were occupied by poor families. Some , through old age, or the possession of a larger family than ordinary, had a little less, and two or three in more favourable circumstances had a little more comfort than their neighbours, but in every house money was scarce....But, as they were fond of saying, money isn't everything. Poor as they were, ever one of the small cottages, so much alike when seen from the outside, had for its inmates the unique distinction of being 'our place' or 'ho-um'...."
- from LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD.

"For anyone interested in family history who discovers a long line of 'ag labs' among their ancestry, this will give a true picture of the hard lives that they lived. Hard does not necessarily translate as miserable or unhappy though, their pleasures were simple and few by our standards today but in many ways they were happier and more contented I think." About this Genealogy

This is a search for the ancestors of
Fred Lashwood GRANT
(10 Sep 1882 - 7 Dec 1942) and
Alice (GILLINGS) GRANT (27 Jan 1882 - 21 Jul 1963)
our paternal grandfather and grandmother.

The objective is to develop two lineages for each of these two people back to 1800 in England. Relevant family surnames are GRANT, GILLINGS, LASHWOOD and KITELEY. Currently, the most information that has been found is for the paternal line (GRANT) of Fred.  While lesser information has been found for the paternal line (GILLINGS) for Alice.  Information for the maternal lines (LASHWOOD and KITELEY) is sparse at the moment.
The direction the genealogy is taking for the next few months is to search all the descendants of Richard GRANT, who are our blood relatives. Leaving any further work on the LASHWOODs, GILLINGs and KITELEYs for the time being.
